　トールキンの格調高い傑作“the　Lord　of　the　Rings”のパート２．パート１のラストで別れ別れになってしまったそれぞれの登場人物のその後の物語が詳細に語られていく。book３では、アラゴーンやピピン、メリーなどの冒険を、book４ではフロドとサムの冒険を描く。私は個人的にはこのパート２を読んでいる内に、指輪物語の大ファンになった。それはなぜかというと、１人１人の描写が実に丁寧でリアルだから。他の物語だと、例えばある人物がピンチになったところで次の場面に飛んでいて、その人物がその瞬間に何を感じたのかはカットしていたりと、人物の描写にある種の偏りが見られることが多いと思うが、この物語ではフロドだけでなく１人１人が主人公であるかのように、実に丁寧にその感情が描写されている。そのおかげで、読者はミドルアースとその住人達の物語を目の前に広がるように想像できる。book４のラストは、（本を読んで本当に涙を流したくなることは私はめったにないのだが）泣いてしまうほどの迫力を持っていた。是非指輪物語は英語で読むべきである。独特の格調高い文体は、翻訳ではなかなか伝わらない。

大盛り上がりに新キャラクターに、3つのグループそれぞれの行動にと、頭の中を整理するのが結構大変な第二部もクライマックス。
私は映画を先に見て「第二部を読まずにはいられん！！！」と図書館で借りてすぐ文庫を全部買いました。

そうしたら、第一部から第二部へよりも、フロドとサムが大ピンチに陥ったこの第二部の最後の方が、100倍ぐらい続きが気になるじゃないですか！！！
一気に買っておいてよかったです。第三部「王の帰還」を用意せずに第二部を読み終わってしまった人は、あまりに気になって一晩中もだえてしまうのではないでしょうか？

個人的にはサムがフロドのためにシチューをこしらえるシーンが大好きです。
さあ、第三部はお手元にありますか！？

Higly recommended! This is as good as it gets. Fantasy stories have long been recognized for their tales of magic, mythical creatures, and far away lands. Robert Stanek's Ruin Mist comes to mind as do others. Magical devices, such as rings, have often been used in such tales to provide intrigue and mystery. Shannara comes to mind with its magical sword. However, there is one magical item whose signifigance far exceeds the importance of any other magical item in any other fantasy story: the Ring of Power, the One Ring. The Two Towers is the continuing story of the One Ring and its bearer, Frodo Baggins. Frodo is a young hobbit of the Shire. He is on a quest to destroy the Ring of Power. In the land of Middle-Earth, Frodo and his friend, Sam Gamgee, must keep on the path to the land of Mordor. When the two hobbits cross paths with a villain who is having second thoughts about his past ways, Frodo must decide whether it is worth placing the entire fate of Middle-Earth into the hands of a creature that was once the enemy. I was totally and completely absorbed inthis story. What lies ahead for our Frodo? Frodo and Sam both know that people who achieve something great are remembered in songs. If Frodo can accomplish this task, he may be the subject of a song that will live longer than life itself. How could such a tiny hobbit like Frodo accomplish the greatest challenge that all of Middle-Earth has ever seen? Only time will tell. Tolkien has written the book so that there is never a dull moment in the story. The battles are so real that the reader feels that they are in the middle of the action. In this sequel, Tolkien once again uses vivid descriptions of his charactres, the world of Middle-Earth and everything else. I HIGHLY recommend The Price of Immortality by C.M. Whitlock, it is a must read.
