映画「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」３部作を視て、原作本に興味を持った方が多いと思います。懐に余裕がある方なら全巻大人買いして、慎重な方なら本巻を買って取り合えず読んでみる…。いずれにしても最初に読むのは本巻と言う事になります。その際ちょっとしたコツを知っておくと、挫折する可能性がおおいに減ると思われます。コツは２つあります。
コツ１：序章を読まずに第１章「待ちに待った誕生祝い」から読む。
ナゼかというと後から分かるのですが序章には大変なネタバレを含んでいる上、今はまだ知らない人物名、種族名、地理名が初心者を無視して洪水のように頭の中に流れ込んでくるので、大概の人はそこで頭がパンクします。何だつまらねえ、読むのはヤメ！…これを防ぐには序章を飛ばすのが１番です。序章は「王の帰還」を読み終えてから読みましょう。
コツ２：本巻を読む前に岩波から出版されている「ホビットの冒険」を読む。
コツ２はコツ１程重要ではありません。しかしビルボ・バギンズが如何なる経緯で指輪を発見したかが詳細に説明されているので「ホビットの冒険」を序章代わりに読むのがいいと思います。１点だけ注意すると「ホビットの冒険」は小学生にも分かるように平易な文章で書かれています。翻訳版もそれに合わせてひらがな主体の文章になっていて、大の大人が読むのは少々勇気が要ります。

それではおさらいです。
コツ１：「旅の仲間」の序章は飛ばす。
コツ２：「指輪物語」を読む前に「ホビットの冒険」を読んでおくと「指輪物語」本編の理解を助けます。

たくさんのバージョンが出ているＬＯＴＲですが、
店頭で売ってるペーパーバックは字が小さすぎって思いませんか？

私は英語苦手なので辞書も引きたいし書き込みもしたい！派で、
立ち読みするたびに溜め息ついてました。
しかしトールキンの原書が読みたい衝動は押さえきれず、
「Large print」と書かれたこのバージョンに望みをかけて注文！！

・・・本当に大きい。中学校の英語の教科書並の字の大きさです。
ただ、ページ数が増えただけ分厚くなってますので、
通常のものより重くなっています。
しかし、字の大きいことの嬉しさと比べると、あまり気になりませんよ。

同じような悩みをお持ちの方、
是非この「ISBN1-59413-007-8」のバージョンおすすめします！！

ちなみに、表紙は映画のシャイアの風景の写真になっています。

映画を観た人には薦めているのですが、映画のような急激なストーリ展開がいきなりあるわけではなく、しかも序章がまるで研究書か歴史書のように始まるために、とっつきにくいものになっています。実際、私は学生以来３回ほど序章で挫折し、なかなか先へと読み進めることが出来ませんでした。しかしすべて読み終わって言えるのは、それこそが、この作品の最も優れたところでもあるのです。小さなホビットの小さくみえる冒険譚が、壮大な歴史絵巻になっていくさまこそが、巨大な歴史に翻弄される私たち自身にも似て大きな共感を呼ぶのです。
主人公のフロドは何の特別な能力もないままに、その壮大な歴史で最も重要な責務を負い、ほとんど誰の眼にも触れることなく困難な道のりを旅します。そして、任務を遂行した後も、普通の人として村に戻り、普通の人として生きていきます。しかも癒されることのない傷を負いながら。
作者は表向き否定していますが、２０世紀前半の大きな２度の戦争のもとで書かれたこの本は、その影響を非常に大きく受けていると言えます。この二つの戦争で特徴的だったのは、戦ったのも傷ついたのも、戦記物語で出てくるような英雄たちではなく、一般のほんとうの普通の人々でした。
これらの戦争を間近で見ていた作者が、主人公を英雄や王の末裔ではなく、何も出来ない、陽気だが小さいホビットたちとしたことは非常に象徴的であると思います。
この作品が１９世紀までのロマン文学に一見似つつも、全体としては新しい地平にたどり着き、それが後にファンタジーというジャンルになりえたのは、剣と魔法が描かれているからではなく、まさにこの点なのですから、映画からでは中々見えてこないそんな内容の深化を体験するためにも是非読むことをお奨めします。
