怖い魔女の話なのに、どこか少し抜けているところがある。
魔女の見分け方も、話の筋も、不可思議なところがあるが、無茶苦茶の一歩手前で留まっている感じ。

子供がダールの作品を読む順番としては、
「窓ふき会社」、「マチルダ」、「チョコレート工場」
がお勧め。

この３冊をこの順番で読んで、面白いと感じる人なら、「魔女がいっぱい」も楽しめると思います。

ダールの人間味と、皮肉について慣れていない人が読んだら、こんな本読んで子供が大丈夫だろうかと心配するかもしれません。

「窓ふき会社」、「マチルダ」、「チョコレート工場」を楽しめた子供なら、この作品も楽しめると思います。
そういう子供には、評論社の「ダールコレクション」は安心して勧めることができます。

ダールの作品には、どれを読んでも、ダールの危うさがちりばめられているようにと思われます。

知ってますか?ロアルドダールの本はずいぶん前に出版されてたんです。
で、それは訳者さんは同じなんですが、訳し方が違うんです!私はその古い方のばっかり読んでいたんですが、本屋でコレを見るけてコレを読んでみたら、もうびっくり！
私はロアルドダールの本が大好きなのでがっかりしました。僕が高慢ちきになっているのに一番がっかりしまいした。みなさんもよんでみればわかります。訳し方が全く違います!
というわけで☆三つです

　この小説を奇想天外という可笑しな言葉にあてはめるのは大人の視点だと思います。この小説を読んだ子どもはダールの作った魔女のリアリティから、きっと街ゆく女性全てを魔女かどうかと観察するはずです。

　というか、私がそうだったのでした。小学校中学年だった頃、家に置いてあったこの物語を手に取り夜な夜な読んでいました。それまで触れていた間抜けな方法で簡単にやられてしまう魔女ではなく、子ども殺しをやってのける恐ろしい魔女の登場と、それに立ち向かう少年の勇気にすっかり魅せられ、物語に浸かっていたのを強く覚えています。

　まだ生まれてもいない自分の子どもが一人で物事を考える少年か少女になった時に大人へのステップの一つになればな。という気持ちでこの新しい本を買いました。何年後になるか分かりませんが、どう受け止めてくれるか今から楽しみです。
