この本を始めて読んだのは確か小学生の低学年だったような気がします。
父の仕事がチョコレートに関係していたことも相まって、小学校で「自分の好きな本を紹介しましょう」という授業では、毎回この本を推薦していました。（高学年になっても･･･笑。）
この本の魅力を無理やりまとめるなら、
１チョコレートは子供が大好きである。

２工場とは実生活において、あまり関わりがなく、未知の空間である。
３更に本の中では、予期しないこと、想像も出来ないような事で本当に起こったらなんて素敵（面白い）なんだろう!!っと思わせることが、次々に起こる。
っと言うような理由でしょう。
本が嫌いな子でも、読んだら一生ものの本になる事間違いなし。

小学生の時に読んでから、何度も何度も読み返している素晴らしい本です。なんと言っても、チョコレート工場の中には、子供なら誰でもあこがれるようなチョコレートの川を筆頭にチョコレートだらけ。チョコレート工場に行けるようになった経緯も素敵です。当時、チョコレートなど買ってもらえなかった私は、くじ付きのチョコレートにあこがれました。自分の子供にも大きくなったら絶対読んでもらいたい本です。

初めて読んだのは小学生のとき、心の片隅で「また読みたい読みたい」と思いながら本屋では児童書のコーナーも欠かさずチェックする私が再び出会ったのは大学時代、友人の部屋で。聞けば彼女にとっても『思い出の一冊』だとか。それから数年、やっと手に入れることができた折の読後感は20年前と少しも変わりませんでした。お気楽ほのぼのな話ではなく、主人公宅の困窮生活は笑えませんし、社長が工場で雇っている工員もまた意味ありです。なのに読み終わったときはなんとも言えない晴れ晴れとした気分です。余談、何の根拠もありませんが、私が今まで読んだ本で、ものを食べるときの描写が素晴らしい話はハズレがありません。チョコレートの川、見てみたいものです。
