作者の自伝的作品ということですが、
まずはウンゲラーの作品という先入観無しにお読みください。
ドイツの工場で作られたテディベアは誕生日プレゼントとしてデビッド少年と出会います。
オットーと名づけられ、
デビッドの親友オスカーとの楽しい日々もつかの間、
戦争が３人を離散させます。
ユダヤ人、黄色い星、強制収容所、防空壕、空襲・・・。
瓦礫の上で拾い上げたアメリカ兵の命を救い、彼の故郷へ。
そしてまたも数奇な運命でぼろぼろになったあげく骨董屋へ。
そして奇跡的にデビッドとオットーに再会するのです。
多くの人の手で縫い合わされ、補修されるオットーの縫い目が心に残ります。
戦争の現実、私たちもしっかりと受け止めたいです。

うちの子供の小学校では、10月から3月まで、月1回、保護者による読み聞かせをしています。
昨年、小学5年生のクラスでこの本を読みました。
縫いぐるみの目を通して書かれた話ですが、とても重い問題を抱えていて、
5年生ではナチス･ドイツによるユダヤ人迫害など、知っている子の方が数えるほどでしょう。
それでも、この話から子供たちが何を感じるかを大切にしたいと思いました。
戦争は嫌だと感じる子、オットーが数奇な運命の後に持ち主だった少年の手に戻ったことを
喜んでいる子、さまざまです。
その年の読み聞かせの中で印象に残った本として、この本を上げてくれた子供も多く、
年齢が上がり、ここに書かれていることの暗い部分を受け止められるようになったとき、
また、思い出してくれることを期待しています。

第二次大戦のために少年たちと離ればなれになってしまったテディベアが、戦争のようすとその後の数奇な運命を自らふりかえった「自伝」絵本。シリアスなテーマ、抑えたタッチと淡い色づかいなど、独特のユーモアと皮肉にあふれたこれまでのウンゲラーの絵本ではあまり見られなかったタイプの作品だが、全体の設定や描写のはしばしに作者らしい感性とサービス精神がうかがえる。
