赤ちゃんだったイヌの「エルフィー」が、だんだん大きくなって、年をとり、そして死んだ。ぼくは悲しくてたまらないけれど「エルフィー」との思い出があるから頑張れる。生きているものは必ずいつかは死んでしまう・・・。こんな当たり前で大切な事が、子どもでもわかりやすい文章でつづられている。大人の私が読んでいても胸が熱くなる。今のこの時を、精一杯生きようと思う。

エルフィーは僕と一緒に育っていつも仲良し。
けれど、いつしか僕の方が背が大きくなり、
それと同時にエルフィーは歳をとって天国へ行く。
エルフィーの死は悲しいけれど、
僕には一つ、救いがある。
それは・・・
というお話。娘が生まれてすぐに買った思い出の絵本です。
現在では小学校の教科書にものっているそうですが
たかが絵本とあなどれません。
泣けてきます。

水でさえも、毎日けなしたコップの水と、褒めた水とでは
おいしさが違い、また花でも褒めて育てるとキレイな花を
咲かせるといいます。
まして生き物ならどうでしょう。
毎日「だいすきだよ」って言うことは動物にとっても
うれしいんだと思います。
「ずっとだいすき」
それは今だけでなく、この先も。
そして、あなたがいなくなる日がくることは悲しいけれど、
もしも、いなくなったとしても・・・・
その先もずーっとずっと大好き。

「すきなら、すきと いってやればよかったのに
だれも、いってやらなかった。
いわなくっても、わかると おもっていたんだね。」
言葉にして伝えることの大切さ。
子供だって伴侶だってペットだって、わかっていても
「すきだよ」って言ってもらえたらどんなにうれしいだろう。

この絵本の「僕」をまねして、
娘たちは我が家の猫に毎晩「ずっとすきよ」と言って寝ます。
イヤな抱き方をされても、彼も娘たちにくっついて
寝ます。そんな光景を見ていると彼がうちに来て
よかった、君にあえてよかったよ、と心から思います。
そしてこの本にも。

大好きだったエルフィーとの別れ。とっても悲しいんだけど、気分はいくらか楽だった。それは、いつもエルフィー に大好きだって言っていたから。愛情はたっぷりあっても いつも何度も本人に伝えることがどんなに大切かを感じ られました。この絵本を通じて子供にも、愛と同時に愛する物に必ず死がくることが伝えれるといいと思っています。
