刀城言耶シリーズの第１作です。
私は読む順番が逆で、
第４作「山魔の如き嗤うもの」を最初に、
次に第３作の「首無の如き祟るもの」と
読んできまして、
本作「厭魅の如き憑くもの」を
読むに至りました。

こうして遡ってみるとわかるのですが、
第１作はなかなか読みづらいです。
逆に言うと、シリーズを重ねるごとに
読みやすくなっています。
でも、民俗学的ホラーの雰囲気は、
読みづらい分、
この第１作が一番かもしれません。
作品の舞台のおどろおどろしさを醸し出すのに
随分とページを費やしているといえます。

実際、事件が起きるのは、
物語も半ばになってからです。
でも、心配ご無用。
驚愕のラスト、
つまりミステリとの融合は
本作品でも果たされていますから。

「カカシ様はいつでも見ている。」
−−帯広告のこの文言が、
読み終わってみるととても身に沁みる作品でした。

面白い!分野もホラー的民族学をベースにしてるし今までなかったのでは?
雰囲気十分!読みながら主人公の気分で閉鎖社会(小野真由美「黒祠の島」の感じ)で起きる不可解な事件を味わえます(その代わりに主人公の個性がやや薄いかも)。
そして最後には本格も味わえるという上手い作品!( 章の作り方に賛否があるかもしれませんが)
民族学と本格が上手く融合した作品。
今世紀登場した本格作家では加賀美雅之氏と双璧なしてると思います!作品も一番(07末現在)ではないかと思います。
主人公の個性は負けますが、京極堂の民族学版に近いです。

作者の以前の作品である「蛇棺葬」「百蛇堂」と同系列の作品。直接的にではないが、作者の以前の作品の登場人物や触れられていた人物も登場している。
ホラーミステリーであり、この作者が得意とするテーマではあるのだが、話が盛り上がるたびに視点が変わり、なんだかテレビでドラマが面白くなってきたところでＣＭを入れられたような気分になる。
また、以前は「家」が中心だったのに対して、今回は「村」が中心となり登場人物が増えたためか、個々のキャラは希薄である。
しかし、ホラーミステリーとしては、決してつまらない作品ではない。
作者なりの世界を構築しようとしている点に好感がもてるし、何よりも良く考えられて伏線が張られている。
少なくとも、ムチャクチャなことを書いて「メタミステリ」と称する最近の作品群よりははるかによい作品である。
「蛇棺葬」「百蛇堂」のファンならば、読んでも決して損はしないと思う。
