上下巻を一気に読んだ。冒頭のアララト山（ノアの箱舟が水上から出たという場所）近郊の記述からぐいぐい引き込まれていく。なんともいえない自然な語りに導かれ、いつのまにか自分も旅をし、いつのまにか聖書の世界にとりこまれてしまったような読後感だった。素材となる旧約聖書物語のおもしろさと、旅そのものの魅力がいい具合に混じりあっている。上巻は出エジプト記の旅がとくにおもしろかった。

聖書物語の解釈については、著者と旅の道連れアヴナール（考古学者）との会話が、軽妙だがなかなか奥が深い。私はクリスチャンではないが、おそらくキリスト教やユダヤ教に詳しい人の期待にも十分こたえるものではないか。読み進むうちに、断片的にしか知らなかったエピソードや、聞いたことのある聖句があるべき場所に整理されるようで、西洋の文学や映画に親しむのに必須の聖書の知識が再確認できるのもうれしい。

思索に裏打ちされた味わいのある言葉が多いので、一読、さらには再読の価値あり。
