　アラン・リーの絵が好きで、原著は買ってあったのですが、何しろ英語が読めないので挿絵の状況がわからず、和訳が出たというので買いました。もともとケルト神話は好きでしたので、仕事と家事の合間に２日間で読破しました。

　アラン・リーの挿絵の素敵なことは勿論ですが、物語そのものも神話というよりも英雄譚といった感じで、米英のファンタジーに影響を与えているのがよく分かります。
　訳文は現代的ではありませんが、物語の雰囲気をよく捕らえていると思います。

中世ウェールズの物語をシャーロット･ゲストが英訳したものの和訳です。
形式的には短編物語集のようになっています。
本の最初におさめられている４編のマビノギは、魔法なども出てきて、
さながら北欧神話のよう。登場人物たちは尋常でない力を持ち、神々の
物語のようです。
残りの作品は、騎士道物語、ファンタジーのような感じのものです。
アーサー王伝説と同じ物語・ネタもみられ、読んでいると、グワルヒメイがガウェインに、
ペレドゥルがパーシヴァルに対応することがわかってきます。
昔話のようにくり返しも多く、人名の羅列などもあり、ところどころ飽きる部分も
あるかもしれませんが、神秘的な物語世界に引き込まれ、『指輪物語』でも知られる
アラン・リーの挿絵ともあいまって、遠い世界へいざなわれること請け合いです。
次々に恋をしたり、冒険がふりかかったりで、意外な展開もするので面白く読めます。
誤植が多いのが残念。
