あのディキンスンが聖書を題材に物語を書いたというので読んでみた。ぼく自身は敬虔なクリスチャンでもなければ、神の存在自体信じてはいないのだが、聖書の物語は結構好きなのである。だって、聖書に出てくる数々のエピソードって、奇想に溢れててドラマティックでしょ？
本書では旧約聖書が取り上げられている。新・旧どちらがおもしろいかと問われればぼくは迷わず旧約聖書と答える。新約にもいろんな奇跡が描かれているが、あちらはイエスという男の物語だ。旧約のスペクタクルにくらべたら、足元にもおよばない。
本書では、そんな旧約聖書中のエピソードをそれが起こった時期から間をおかずに口承で伝えられる場面を再現している。どういうことかというと、聖書で描かれている場面が伝説でなく実際に起こった事件として語られるのだ。本書を読むことによってあの有名なエピソードが、どのように伝えられていったのかがなんとなく想像できるのである。各々の物語は臨場感にあふれついつい引き込まれてしまう。それぞれに割かれている章も短くて、さくさくと読めてしまうところが素晴らしい。やってくれるねディキンスン。アイディアが秀逸ではないか。こんなこと誰も思いつかなかった。また、ディキンスンはそれぞれのエピソードを様々なシチュエーションで語りなおすのである。例えばそれは神殿に仕える祭司の間での話であったり、猟師の父親が息子に語るものであったり、新兵の剣術訓練中に下士官が語る物語であったり、医学学校での講義中の話であったり、母が幼子に語って聞かせる場面であったり、労働の歌であったりするのである。まったくの虚構でありながら、それをそう感じさせない手腕はさすがだ。なかでも医学学校の講義なんてシチュエーションはディキンスンのまったくの創造だというのだから舌を巻いてしまう。用意周到でありながら、ひょいとこんな手のこんだ嘘をついたりするのだから、学のないぼくなどすぐに信じてしまう。やっぱりディキンスンはうまいねぇ。
