世界史を勉強してみようと、あれこれ本を読んでいますが、久々に面白いと
思った本です。概説や通史を扱った本はたくさんありますが
単に史実を羅列したものでは退屈します。
その点、この本は馴染みのある「モノ」と「概説」を組み合わせて
世界史をより身近に、わかりやすく解説してくれます。
お薦めの１冊です。

パソコン、インターネット、本
初めの文章に出てきた三つのものにはすべて歴史がある。
そしてその歴史がまた人間の歴史を変えてきた。

今ここで本を開けば文字が印刷されている。
文字もまた歴史があり、人間の歴史を変えてきた。
そして文字は印刷技術によってこれまた人間の歴史を変えてきた。

本書はモノがいかにして人間圏を広げ、

文化と歴史をつくってきたかということをまとめている。
歴史というと普通は人物からアプローチすることになるが、
この本では徹底してモノからアプローチしている。

鉄砲、印刷物、金、食物など個別的にモノと歴史との関わりを
まとめた類書は多いが本書は多くのモノとの関わりを
一冊に網羅していてお得感がある。

読みやすくて勉強になる一冊。

歴史はちょっと苦手という人にもおすすめである。

歴史という言葉には救い難いイメージが付きまとっている。それは象牙の塔の中で古い文献資料に埋もれている姿だ。しかし歴史とは本来そんなスタティックなものなのであろうか？実は我々の身の回りに歴史は「文化」として可視的、不可視的な形で存在している。

時代毎に区切る政治史・王朝史に慣れた目には、本書のようなスタイルに慣れるまで時間がかかることだろう。時代ではなく、「モノ」によって切り取られた世界はまた、まったく違う形を見せる。

人類の生活と深い関わりを持つ「モノ」をテーマにした社会史の本。
