数々の死刑に対する説明と、それにまつわる話が主体。
死刑に賛成、反対という様な事を書いたものではなく、死に至るまでの時間は？苦痛は？確実性があるか？という様な事柄を、実際にあった事例を挙げながら進んでいく解説本みたいな感じです。

死刑執行時やその後の版画や写真が搭載されているので、グロテスクな物が苦手な人にはお勧めできません。

4.0 out of 5 stars 最後は、管理された安全で人道的な死刑という滑稽な刑罰に, 2003/9/1
古代からの死刑方式の変遷をたどれるのでとても面白いです。
支配者たちが「罪人」を公衆の面前でいかに残忍に見せしめとして
殺すか、に心血を注いできたような死刑の方式も、現代に入って、
死刑は残酷なので公開にはしないことになり、ついには
安楽死のような薬物死刑にまで変わって行く。このさまは滑稽でした。

現代における死刑の、民主国家が国民の命を奪うことの滑稽さが
浮かび上がってきて、それも面白かったです。
死刑存続・廃止の論調は一切ありません。
