ナルニア国物語の作者が描く大人のファンタジー。舞台は火星。
言語学者の主人公ランサムがいろいろな生物とコミュケートしながら
火星をさまよう設定はさすが。ことばの大家C.S.ルイスらしい。
もちろんC.S.ルイスの持ち味である、空気の色や匂いさえも感じさせる
優れた情景描写と、人物（？）の心のひだをも描きだす心理描写は健在。

深遠なテーマをエンターティメントの形をかりて読ませる、良質のＳＦファンタジー。

キリスト教擁護論者のルイスが神学をSFで描いて見せたものです。

●マラカンドラ：神から地球を任されていた天使が堕落したために、地球と他の惑星と断絶したことが主人公の冒険を通して説明されます。アダムとイヴの堕落による人間の悲惨、未だ堕落を知らず「罪の存在しない火星種族」と人間の違いが描かれます。

ついでに(^^;)　神学的SF三部作を一気に紹介！
●ペレカンドラ：金星のイヴを堕落させようとする地球の堕天使のもくろみと阻止しようとする主人公の肉体的精神的な戦いが描かれます。実際に創世記のイヴはこのような誘惑を受けたと実感できますし、キリストの死の現場（贖いの十字架）にいたと絶叫する堕天使はのセリフは本当にこわーいしリアルでした。

●サルカンドラ：惑星から帰還した!主人公と、＜科学的な立場を利用した＞地上の悪の勢力との戦いは主人公側の勝利に終わります。（悪はどこまでも卑しく、ただ魂を滅ぼす存在となっています。）それぞれの惑星の責任者？の天使と神、宇宙と天国の関係などが面白いです。背景にアバロン神話（キリスト教以前のケルト神話）も盛り込まれていますが、矛盾なくまとまっています。
ルイスは、神からの「サイン」を古代神話や伝説の中にも見い出していたのかもしれません。
