著者が言いたかったのは、ヒトが他の動物と異なるのは「認識能力」
の差だということ。しかし、データの裏付けは十分とは言えない。
特に、霊長類心理学の成果についての著者の知識はかなり
お粗末だ。カンジの例も挙げているが、この本が書かれた時でも
カンジの研究はもう少し進んでいたはず。化石の形態や
原猿の生態については一流の著者だが、こういう本を書くのには
無理があったようだ。

もう一つ、この本の訳はめちゃくちゃだ。
少しでも人類進化について知識があれば犯しえないミスを
連発している。あまりにも多い。一般的な英文和訳としても
変な所がある。出版社は訳者を選ぶ時に気をつけて欲しい。

初心者が読むと混乱するので星ひとつ。

進化において、どうして人間だけがこれほどの考える能力を持つにいたったのか？　ということを主眼に話が進んでいく。この本では、象徴的な言語能力をもっていることこそを人間の条件と考えて（この仮定はいろいろな本でみることができる）、ネアンデルタール人は人間じゃなく、わたしたちと異なる条件下で生きたヒトと定義するが、歯切れのいいのはここまでで、そこに至る過程は依然としてわかってないのオンパレード。ここまで正直に書かれるとすがすがしくもあるけど（笑）。
