「僕らが住んでいたシカゴでは、ヨーロッパじゅうの、相容れないいくつもの国家が、
　雑音の多いダイアルの右端のあたりに一緒くたに詰め込まれていた。」（本文より）

シカゴは移民の多い町だ。
いろんな人生がやってきては、去っていく。
ずっと同じものがないからこそ、「一瞬」が大切にされるのだろうか。

どんな単調な日々でも、ふと、きらりと光る一瞬がある。
この作品は、そんな瞬間をひょいとすくいあげて、短い文に凝縮している。

モノクロ写真の一カ所にとっておきの美しい色をのせたような、そんな短い物語たちがたくさんつまっている。
作者自身も「シカゴ育ち」。地元民ならではの視線と愛着が好ましい。
文句なしにおすすめの一品。

　『ナイン・インタビューズ』を読んで、個人的に一番、高感度が高かったのがスチュアート・ダイベック。「シカゴ出の青二才の書いたものを読んでくれる読者が日本にいると思うと本当に感動する」みたいなところ。この短編集で一番よかったのは「冬のショパン」。アパートの上の階から漏れてくるピアノに耳を澄ましていた少年。そのピアノの主はやがて音楽大生となるが、どうやら黒人の子を妊娠して家に急遽戻る。階段で言葉を交わす二人。

「あなたが小さかったころ、夜になると時どき、あなたがわあわあ泣いているのが聞こえたわ。たぶん、私には聞こえた声が、あなたのママには聞こえなかったのね。音が上に伝わってきたのよ」
「僕の泣き声で起きちゃったの？」
「それは心配いらないわ。私、もともとすごく眠りが浅いの。雪が降っても目がさめちゃうから」(p.16)

少年の住む階には、元ポーランドの将校という叔父が尾羽散らしてまいこんでくる。凍傷となった足を暖めるために、足湯にポトンと発砲する薬剤を入れて休む叔父。上の階から聞こえてくるのはショパン。その曲が何かを少年は、その叔父から教えてもらう。

　やがて妊娠した娘は、ひとりで家を出て子供を生む。叔父も放浪の旅に出そうだ。そして、最後になって、誰が泣いていたがわかる。そして沈黙に耳を澄ます。

　こんな淡々とした話が続く短編集だが、柴田元幸さんが後書きで「いままで訳した本のなかでいちばん好きな本を選ぶとしたら、この『シカゴ育ち』だと思う」と書くのはわかるような気がする。

　この作者は短編がうまいと思う。人生で、ちょっとした出来事だけど、その後の人生に大きく影響を与えるようなことがある。そのような、見過ごしがちな美しい瞬間を、この短編たちは見事に救い上げている。
登場人物たちが、繊細でロマンチックなのもいい。
様々な形態の「美しい瞬間」に心酔できる一冊だ。
