親友のファンショーがいなくなったことを知らされた「僕」は、彼の残した小説を出版するが、「僕」の生活は一変してしまう。「僕」がファンショーの名で小説を書いていたという噂が流れ始めてから「僕」の中の何かがおかしくなる。「僕」は親友を愛していたのと同じくらい憎んでもいたのだ。彼は本当に現実世界にいたのだろうか、もしかしてファンショーは「僕」ではないのだろうかと現実と幻想の境界線が曖昧になってくる不思議な作品。「われわれは自分自身のために存在しているのだろうし、ときには自分が誰なのか、一瞬垣間見えることさえある。だが結局のところ何ひとつ確信できはしない。人生が進んでゆくにつれて、われわれは自分自身にとってますます不透明になっていく。」この「僕」の言葉の中にファンショー（＝オースター）の心の叫びが聞こえてくるような気がした。

探偵小説の体裁をとったオースターの代表作。
鍵のかかった部屋に決して入ることができない主人公。
手にすることのできる幸福と、決して手の届かない謎。
解決しない謎解きでありながらも、後味の爽やかな物語。

ニューヨーク三部作の第三作目。ポールオースターのこの時期の作品のテーマが繰り返し出されている。言葉に対するこだわり、「私」の存在、書く事と孤独。作者自身にとっての重要な問題を理解しようとする態度が小説という形で描かれている。同じテーマがいくつかの作品で繰り返されたとしても読者にとって興醒めにならないのは、作者が読者に媚びずに自身の為に、描いているからだと思える、そこに作者の魅力がある。オースターの深さが味わえる一作。
