　誰の記憶の倉庫にも「思春期」と書かれた箱がある。埃をかぶった箱の中には交換日記、出しそびれた手紙、冒険のための地図、家出の計画・・・。少し前なら、こそばゆかった物が年を経た今では懐かしく見える。
　この大河小説も少年たちの家出騒動で幕を開ける。未熟で熱しやすく不思議に輝いている少年の日々。一方、周囲は彼らの行動に振り回され、対応に苦慮する。心から子を思う気持ちは同じでも、溢れる愛で包み込む親もあれば、不器用で伝えられない親もある。

　全体を見れば少なくない量だが、前半７巻の出来事は親しみ易く、登場人物たちへの感情移入も容易である。また、ノーベル文学賞受賞の『１９１４年夏』を含む後半６巻は、世界史の復習にもなる作家からの伝言であり現代への予言でもある。
　登場人物の人生の展開は、この小説では特に読み手の楽しみになるとの観点から、以下人名を伏せ各巻の印象のみを記したい。
　蛇足ながら、上記観点から本巻末の「訳者あとがき」と「解説」は最終巻読了まで読まずにとっておくことをおすすめする。

「命をかけてきみのものになる」
１４歳の少年ジャックが、親友ダニエルと家出決行前に書いた手紙の結びーーーそれは、2人の灰色の交換ノートにはさまれていました。
どうです？続きが知りたくなりませんか？
淡々とわかりやすい文章で、きらめくような感受性の少年たちの日々が
描かれています。この1作目「灰色のノート」だけでも一生の宝物です。
「チボー家」は３７年にノーベル文学賞を受賞しておりますが、
とにかく、わかりやすく入りやすいのです。
個人的には、「ジャン・クリストフ」や実存主義文学より、心をひきつけてやまない、永遠のフランス文学の最高傑作です！

時代、国は違っても
思春期の少年(ジャック)のいろんな感情、行動に
共感できます。腹も立つし、あまりの桃色加減にこっちが
読んでてはずかしくなるくらい。
でも、自分の中にもあるそういうもやもやした感情が
みるみる言葉にあらわされていくのを見て
「あぁ、わたしだけじゃなかったんだ。」
と嬉しくなることも多々あり。
さすがノーベル文学賞だけあり心の細かな描写がすばらしい。
心の声に耳を澄ますこと、この本からはまず
それを学びました。
