アメリカにおける多文化主義をめぐる論を紹介しつつ、多文化主義の歴史的意味と思想的背景を概説した書である。著者によれば、多文化主義とは西洋近代の合理主義的知の枠組みを批判する、認識論上の挑戦である。

多文化的認識論は次の４つの主張を柱とする。すなわち1現実とは構築されたものである、2解釈とは主観的なものである、3価値とは相対的なものである、4知とは政治的な現象である、と。
これに対し、単一文化的認識論は、1現実とは人間の表象とは別個に存在する、2現実は言語使用（ランガージュ）とは別個に存在する、3真実とは表象の正確度の問題である、4知とは客観的なものである、の４つの主張を柱としている。
これによって、「普遍主義対相対主義」や「平等対差異」などの難問が出てくるのだ。単なる現象記述的な論に終わらずに、読者に根本問題を提示しているこの部分（第四章）は、本書の中でひときわ輝いている。

著者は、多文化主義は近代性を根本的に問い直すものだという。グローバル化が進む中で、我々も遅かれ早かれ不可避的にこの問題と格闘せねばなるまい。多文化主義に反対するとしても、本書に書かれたことを理解していることは非常に有益であろう。

大学で卒論に向かうとき、概論として当分野への視野を与えてくれました。
チャールズ・テイラーのことは本書で知りました。ありがとうございます。

翻訳の質が、訳者によってだいぶ違っていて、少し読みにくかったです。個人的には、これまたいくつもの編著を参考にさせていただいた三浦氏に、全て訳出して欲しかったかな、と…。
