最近は昔話の内容が大きく変更され、争い毎は良くないというので、鬼退治に行った桃太郎が鬼ヶ島の鬼と仲良くなるらしい。そのうち赤ずきんちゃんだってオオカミとお友達になるに違いないと思う。この間も文楽を見に行ったら同様の筋の変更が成されていて興ざめであり、これは良くないことと思った。なぜなら、人間が本来持つくらい部分を肯定してそれを具体化したものが昔話であり、そのような昔話という形で子供の頃に無意識のうちに我々が持っている残忍な部分、冷酷な一面を知る機会を得ることが大人になってから知ることのショックを緩和してくれると思うからだ。昔話を道徳の教科書のようにするのではなく、昔話の内容を教訓と位置づけて道徳を教えたらどうか。
内容の浅薄な出版物が増え、活字も読まれなくなり、最も安易な情報入手方法である「見る」ことばかりに注目が集まる中、聞いたり、想像したりという、我々が本来持っている五感をもっと十分に、しかもバランスよく使うことを子供達に教えたいと思う。その一貫としてこの本は書棚に一冊置いておくべき本であるとおもう。

装丁や挿し絵が美しく、カラー口絵も楽しめた。
しかし、訳があまり良くない。
初版から収録した話（「ねずの木の話」など）では、それがかえって初版の不気味さや残酷さを醸し出している。
が、本文と会話文の改行がなく、一続きの長い文章のようで、読みづらく感じた。しかも会話文には句点が無いので、厄介である。

それでも初版の話が読めるのは魅力的である、本棚に一冊あって損ではないと思う。
