本書が出版されたのは１９８９年。
舞台は８０年代前半のNY。
ストーリーは売れない役者の苦悩を軸にユーモアを伴いながら進む。
１５年程前、初めて本書を読んだときは、会話や小道具がおしゃれだった。
ショービジネス、ゲイ、キャッシュオンデリバリー等、
確かにかっこいいNYを感じさせるアイテムだった。
現在の東京ではそれらは普通の情景なっている。
今回久しぶりに読み返してみたが、残念ながら文体は古く、ちょっぴりだるかった。
当時はテンポのいい恋愛小説だったが・・・。
２００６年は８０年代ではないと改めて実感する。
日常の閉塞感やモラトリアム等、今に通じるテーマもあるのだけど。
恋人の自殺の原因を探る主人公は大きな喪失感を味わうのだが、
その辺りは「ライ麦畑・・・」に通じる透明感があり、読んでみて損はない。
