この本は、ぜひ単行本で読んで下さい。単行本でなければ、感動もうすれるというもの。映画もありますが、映画を見ただけではムードだけはつかめますが何だかわからないので、まず、原作をからはいるのをおすすめします。
この世界がお好きならたまらない本です。

異国情緒あふれるミステリアスな紀行文学。

主人公はインドで失踪した友人シャビエル（ザビエル）を追って、インドを旅する。ボンベイ〜マドラス〜ゴアへと旅を進めるが、手がかりは一向に掴めず、様々な人物との出会いを通じて、謎ばかりが深まっていく。そして最終到達地、ゴアの高級ホテルで彼が見たものとは。。

ザビエル、神智学協会、呪術師、ゴアの教会など様々な記号を散りばめたこの小説は、紀行文学の形をとりながら、主人公が旅しているのは、実際のインドであると同時に、インド・西洋が織り成してきた５００余年の精神史であることに気づく。つまり読者はこの旅を通じて、東洋と西洋がぶつかりあい、融合してきた歴史の一側面をかいまみることになる。最後の解釈は読む人自身に委ねられよう。読んだ人がこの本の中でどんな旅をしてきたのか、が問われるラストだ。

エスニック、オリエンタリズム・スピリチュアリズム、シンクロニシティ、と様々な事を考えさせられる小説だ。本は薄く、須賀敦子氏による翻訳も秀逸で、眠れぬ夜の読書におすすめの一冊といえよう。

幻想的でとても美しく、でもクールな印象を与えるとても面白い本です。
物語としてもとてもよく出来ており、長くもなく、難解でもなく、でも味わい深い小説です。夜寝る前に、静かに読みたい一冊です。違う世界に旅できます。
