ミュージアムを西洋の発明した制度であると明らかに認識した上で、その歴史的な成り立ち
を歴史、思想的な背景から跡付けた労作である。
西欧圏域以外でのミュージアムが、本家のそれに比べてなぜ見劣りするものでしかあり得な
いのかという点について、歴史文化の異質性にその根拠を探っている。
にもかかわらずここでの議論は、異文化間の異質性を絶対的なものとして固定化し、西欧の
思想を植民地的拡大主義に限定した上で、特に日本のミュージアムのしょぼくれ方を、作者
の意図に反して正当化しかねない側面を持っており、それゆえであろう、何だか非常に貧乏
臭い読後感を持ってしまった。
過去の分析はおもしろいけど、未来への展望が無いな、ということで星3つ。

ミュージアムという制度・思想が、何故ヨーロッパ圏でのみ発達しえたのかを追ったスリリングな好著。
特に最終章「ミュージアムの思想の拡がり」は、高い問題意識に支えられており、読みごたえがある。「西欧におけるコレクションの制度化とミュージアムの思想の根源は、キリスト教の宗教権力に対して世俗権力の優位性を確保したいという欲求であった」と一文などは、なるほど話をヴンダーカンマー／クンストカンマーから始めなければならなかったことをよく分からせてくれる。
