新潮文庫の「音と言葉」は抄訳でしたが、こちらでは完全に訳しています。
比較して読むと面白いかもしれません。
巨匠の音楽に対する考え方が判り、音楽を鑑賞する上で参考になるものと思います。

価格はやはり高いですが、多くのフルトヴェングラーのコアなファンの方や研究家の方は手にされているんでしょう。
読むのに時間はかかりますが、興味深い論文・評論集です。

たとえばフルトヴェングラーは、ブルックナーに関連して「不完全ではないことが偉大なのではなく、偉大とは真に偉大なものを含んでいることだ」と言う。これはブルックナーについて語っている以上に、彼自身の演奏態度を示すものであり、さらには「音楽」というジャンルを超えて、私たちの美的判断、生きるというそのことの批評にまで及んでいるように思われる。

トスカニーニやカラヤンが音楽について語ったとすれば、それは彼らの音楽を理解するための補助の役割を示し、それだけでしかないだろう。だがフルトヴェングラーのそれは、いわば文明批評、人生観にまでかかわるものになってしまう。彼にとっての音楽とは、まさに彼の全存在をかけた表現であり、彼の演奏のほうもまた、単なる演奏にとどまらず、私たちの全存在に語りかけてくる圧倒的な出来事として体験される。
「私の音楽を理解する者はあらゆる悲惨から抜け出すことができる」と語った、ベートーヴェンの言葉が思い出される。
