ランボーの『地獄の季節』がいい例だが、ある時点から、少なくとも芸術に対して誠実であろうとする者にとっては、もはや何も創作するができないという事態が生じた。
『ゴドー』はその逼迫した状況に勇敢にも挑戦し、小さな、しかし偉大な風穴を開けることに成功している。
「どうにもならん」というエストラゴンのセリフから始まるこの劇は、芸術の不可能性を認識した上で、その不可能性と戯れている。
一方では、軽快でナンセンスな喜劇であり、他方では、終末の予感（芸術の死、人間性の死）に満ちた悲劇である。
いずれにしても、芸術を志す者にとっては避けて通ることのできない道である。
本書は現代に生きるわれわれの導きの糸となってくれるだろう。

例えば、生きる事の意味をとことん考えて見る。「意味」「価値」etc....。二人の何者が分からない男が延々とはぐらかした無駄話を続ける。「ゴドー」という何者かを待ちながら。戯曲とは「読むための文学」として完結する事が存在理由なのではない。芝居に昇華されるための「アウトライン」として、「開かれて」いるべきものだ。そしてこの戯曲ほどあらゆる解釈と演技を成立させる、『開かれた戯曲』はまず、ない。演出家と役者の解釈と実力によってあらゆるカラーを見せ、とてつもなく面白い芝居にもなり、最低のつまんない芝居にもなる。（日本では１０年程前に、蜷川幸雄氏が男版・女版として、２バーションを演出した、男「西村晃・江守徹」女「市原悦子・緑魔子」が凄かった。アメリカでは「スティーブ・マーチン」と「ロビン・ウイリアムス」がNYで演じている。凄いキャスト。ぜひ見たかった！）だからこそ本作は演劇の可能性を高らかに歌い上げている。読んで面白い、という作品ではないが、『象徴的』という形容がこれ以上的確にあてはまる作品はなく、それを生みだした、ベケットの着想の凄さに敬意を表して★５つ。

とにかく考えさせられる劇である。ゴドーを待つ二人を中心に劇は進むが、ゴドーは誰なのか？何故待っているのか？等などの疑問が次々を浮かぶ。

読み終わって、あたりを見渡し考える。我々は何かを待っているのであろうか？何を期待し今日を過ごしているのであろうか？

混沌としている世の中を読み解く鍵としても一読をお薦めする。
