中世のキリスト教圏内で信じられてきた「迷信」を学術的に解説していく。悪魔も登場するし、魔女や悪霊も出てきて、慎ましい人間たちを翻弄する。面白いのは、これら現実離れした様々な事柄を当時の人間たちが心底信じ、人々の思想の中枢にまで幻夢がリアルに浸透していたことである。人間はなぜ「迷信」を信じるのだろう？苦しみを避けられない「生」と逃げのびることのできない「死」。それらが、ときに悪魔や魔女や神を生んだのだろうか…と思いを巡らせながら読み進めた。しかしながら、本書は空想の産物ではなく、キリスト教や信仰･歴史にもとづく学術的な１冊である。中世ヨーロッパの迷信や信仰について、現実的な解釈を求める方にお薦めしたい。
