本書を読み終えたとき、私は次のように感じた。
『外国語で…』というタイトルの意味は日本国「外」で行なわれている「国語」教育という意味での「外」「国語」ではないか。
『国語教科書の思想』（石原千秋、２００５、筑摩書房）では日本の国語教育が道徳教育に成りかわっていることを手厳しく批判しているが、本書でも同じような指摘が見られる。
それはさておき、本書のテーマは日本の国語教育の質的転換である。本書では元来の日本の国語教育の批判にとどまらず、「言語技術」という具体的な指導方法を取り入れることを提案している。それは具体的には「読み」の方法に関わるもので、「テクストの分析と解釈・批判」という言葉がしばしば登場する。著者は読み手の気分や教師の一方的な押し付けによる読みではなく、論理を軸とした読みに切り替えるべきであることを主張する。本書の言葉を借りれば、「主観的で感覚的な読解」ではなく「根拠に基づく論理的な読解」を求めるというわけである。そのような読みでは答えは一つには決まらない。それぞれがそれぞれの読みの論拠を示すことでそれも一つの答えとして認められるのである。特に「絵の分析」は日本の国語教育にとっては画期的であるといえるのではないだろうか。
日本の国語教育が変わらなければならないとすると、それは「量」のみの問題ではなく、「質」のレベルでも問い直されなければならない。
本書を読めばきっとそのように思えるはずである。小学生からできる練習問題の付いた本書は小・中・高・大、さらには一般人まで読者の範囲を限定しないだろう。日本の国語教育の改善策を具体的な形で提示した本書の価値は大きい。

　最近、「言語力」といふ言葉を耳にすることが増えてきましたが、それがどういふ種類の力を想定してゐるのかと考へると、相変はらず百科的な知識以上のものではないように思へます。
　それももちろん重要であるのは明白ですが、それだけでは片輪走行なのであって、本書では、それを十分に生かし、また、その不足を補うための能力たる分析力などの読書力、その基礎力を養ふ実際的な方法が、わかりやすく丁寧に紹介されてゐます。
　なるほどと頷くことも多く、著者の『外国語を身につけるための日本語レッスン』ともども、参考にさせていただいてをります。

　本書では、クリティカルリーディングを勧めている。タイトルを見て、外国語（英語）が話せるようになることを期待して、本書を買うと肩透かしを食う。Speakingの本でも無ければ、外国語の本でもない。クリティカルリーディングの勧めである。タイトルと内容の食い違いを理解して買うと良い。
