　『アウステルリッツ』で日本でも知られるようになったゼーバルトの新しい邦訳『移民たち　四つの物語』が刊行された。４人の移民たちの苦難にみちた人生が多数の写真とともに語られていく。
　なんといってもこの小説の魅力はそれぞれの人生の記憶が見事に語られる様だろう。特異で衝撃的な人生を生きてきた人たちだが、その物語は決してセンセーショナルなやり方ではなく、静かにそして慎みをもってひとつひとつ解きほぐすように語られていく。長い沈黙の後にやっと話し出される記憶、苦しそうな話し方で物語られる記憶。そのような苦々しい記憶を私たちは目の当たりにすることになる。
　『アウステルリッツ』からあまり間を置かずにゼーバルトの作品が邦訳されたことは素晴らしいことだ。このような美しい作品を読むことを可能にしてくれた白水社と訳者の鈴木仁子氏にここで感謝したいと思う。

前邦訳作品とはちがい、四部からなる短編集で、『異郷に暮らし、過去の記憶に苛まれる男たちの生と死。』
一定のトーンを保ち、語られる物語はこれ以上ないというぐらい率直で飾りがない、私はこのひとの作品を読むのに相当な時間を要する。なぜか、というと、息苦しくなり、読後しばし呆然としてしまうからである。読む気分をすかさず捕らえ、本を掴むのはすこしむずかしいようだ。
彼は失われたものを、亡者を追いかけていく。私など、そのようなことは利にもならないと思う質の人間だけれど、誰にでも反応する部分はあるだろう。決して爽快感はない、幸福感もない、でも惹かれずにはいられぬ、知らずにはいられぬ。それは語り手とともに読者である私も感じたことであった。無論、それを書かずにはいられぬ、というよりは書くことをすべて目的にしている彼は、作家以外のなにものでもない、それが、現代日本の｢商業作家｣と大いに異なる。是は、恥ずべきこと。
｢直線距離にしておよそ２００キロ、かくも離れて―だがどこから？」
異郷に生きた彼自身の言葉でもある。
それにしても、全世界どの時代のどんな人間にも共通するらしい、遠くへきてしまったものだという実感が、ほとんど書くことの糧になるようだ、とあらためて感じた。

　痛みと悲しみにみちた、封印すべき記憶、だがそれは、懐かしく好ましい思い出の棲家への、たったひとつの入り口でもある。
　最初に本を開いて眺めた数々の写真は、これら四つの物語を読んだあとではまるで違ったものになって胸にせまってくるだろう。この感覚は突然にやって来て、しかも強烈である。たとえばごつごつと聳える山と教会の塔を背景にした、十歳くらいの少年たちの写真。読者自身もまた、彼らと肩を組んで歩いていたかのような錯覚におちいってしまう。共通の悲劇的出自をもった四人の男たちは、こうして鮮やかに蘇るのだ。読者の心の襞にわけいって真実となる。そして「ある種のものごとはときにきわめて長い間をおいて、思いもよらぬかたちで、不意を打って舞い戻る･･･」という語り手の言葉があまりに重く切実にひびいてくる。
　ところで堀江敏幸氏の解説は蛇足だった。というより訳者による解説をこそ読みたかったと思う。
