上・中・下　　3巻完結しています。中国書道史を、通して解説した本では、現在最も良い本だと思います。図書館、大学などに備えるべき名著だといえましょう。
中国語訳がでてもよいと思うくらいです。

この中巻では、王羲之　の子の王献之の世代から始まって南北朝、隋唐　五代までを詳細に解説しています。とりあげていない有名書跡を探すほうが難しいぐらい網羅されています。唐中期の「史思明哀冊」まであげています。

近年、大量に出土している墓誌資料、大陸で再発見されたもの、ロンドン、パリにある敦煌写本など、新しく写真が公開された真跡・模写本などが、できるだけ多く紹介・批評され、めざましい集成が行われています。
85-91頁には鄭道昭の磨崖、142-147頁北斉の磨崖の現地の写真がとりあげてあるのも注目したいところです。

また、従来、知られていた名跡でも、新しく良い模写本・拓本がでた場合は、そちらを推薦されています。例えば「九成宮醴泉銘」がそうです。
書の変遷を明かにすることに力点が置かれているので、少々粗雑な書でも資料的に重要なものは取り上げるという方針のようにも感じました。
