上・中・下　　3巻完結しています。現在、中国書道史を、通して解説した本では、最も良い本だと思います。図書館、大学などに備えるべき名著だといえましょう。

この上巻では、1970年代以降、大陸から発見された出土文字資料を駆使して、古代書道史を展開しています。なかでもめざましいのは,258頁の呉(249年以前)の楷書の出現の指摘でしょう。これによって楷書の成立は、後漢末(2世紀末)に遡ることになりました。また、「戦国時代の筆記体」である「古文」、「秦隷」の正体についての解明も興味深いものです。

108頁には、昔は、後漢時代とされた「八分」体の発展がずっと遡ることが指摘されています。また、漢時代の小字の隷書については、特に細かく紹介されています。

巻末は、王羲之の解説です。新発見のも含め、現存の墨跡を全てチェックし、ひどい偽物や臨書を除いて、できるだけ図版をあげています。また、法帖拓本のよいものも選択されて批評されています。図版はモノクロで高9cmぐらいですが、800点以上の膨大な量で、しかも殆ど鮮明な印刷です。少しぼけてみえる図版は、中華人民共和国での粗い写真図版しか写真がない場合のようです。
