人名、地名の用例が記載されている点や、Unicode (UCS) や Shift_JIS などの各文字コードに対応している点だけでも、実務向けとしての価値がある。さらに、JIS X 0208:1997 と JIS X 0213:2000 の規格票が転載されており、字体包摂の基準などを随時確認できる。JIS制定者側の視点から書かれた、JIS批判への反論などのコラムもまた興味深い。同種の書籍としてはコストパフォーマンスが極めて高い。

ただ、(本書というより JIS X 0213:2000 の欠点なのだが、) Unicode で正式に決まっていたわけではないコード位置をカッコ付きで暫定掲載している点は、混乱を招く。これについては、最新の JIS X 0213:2004 (ネット上でも閲覧可能) を当たるしかない。Windows の次期バージョンが JIS X 0213 に対応する予定であり、それまでには改訂版が欲しいところである。

「JIS X 0208:1997」・「JIS X 0213:2000」規格の作成に使った莫大な資料を基にJIS規格の委員長及び委員により作られた字典。JIS補助漢字が必要な方、熟語が必要な方には薦められませんが、人名・地名に関しては、これ以上ないレベルの資料です。

パソコン、ワープロでテキストを入力する者にとって、必ずぶつかるのが「読み方の分からない漢字」や「パソコンでは表記できない漢字」などであるが、この字典は水準や規格が載っているのは勿論、人名、や一般での使用例、記号についても載っているので参考になる。ただ、掲載されてない漢字も若干あるので、ここは星３つということで。
