とても勉強になりました。ただ話しにでてくる鳥がはっきりとイメージできるほどの知識がなかったので、一緒にイラストでもあったらもっとよかったなあと思いました。

『鳥の雑学事典』は、山階鳥類研究所の非常勤研究員、天皇陛下のご令妹紀宮清子様をはじめ十三人の研究者達が執筆している。所長の山岸哲さんが『まえがき』の中で「なんだ雑学かと侮っていただいては困る」と述べているように、鳥に関するエンサイクロペディア的知識を満載した情報倉庫である。現在日本に生息している鳥の種数は1974年には490種だったものが、2000年では542種に増え、今後もバードウオッチャーの増加により、新しい発見が進み、鳥種は増加するだろうと指摘している。我々の身近で生活しているシジュウカラ、スズメなどの小鳥の平均寿命が一年に満たないと聞くともっと大事にしてやらなければと考える。ミソサザイの標準和名の由来も面白い。暗い厨に入り味噌を食べたからミソ、奈良時代には、小さいことを「ささ」と言ったので、小さい鳥という意味でササキ、それがミソサザイとなったという。水浴び、砂浴びが大好きな小鳥達がオリジナルな、整髪料やパウダーで身だしなみをする話、300キロも生き残るために飛翔するスズメ、我々が日常的に飲む、背の低いサン・コーヒーが、鳥類の生息環境を破壊していると聞くと、野鳥の保護運動について改めて考えさせられる。興味のある話題、解説が一杯である。本書では触れられていないが、ドードーの研究者として著名な蜂須賀正氏さんについても教えて戴きたかった。また中西悟堂さんの著書によると、キジの国鳥選定会議では最初は丹頂鶴が有力であったが、「黒田長久さんが、丹頂鶴は冬鳥であり、国鳥としてキジが相応しいとして推薦した」と述べている。前所長の黒田さんの青年時代の功績も遠慮をなさらずに書いても良かったと思う。いずれにせよ、興味のある話題で一杯、最初のページから通しての読書は不要、どのページを取り出して読んでも面白い本である。

　「山階鳥類研究所」と言えば、日本の中で鳥類を専門に研究している最高峰の研究所。
　そこが編集した本ですから、最先端の知識が詰まっています。

　でも、堅苦しくなく、楽しく読み物として読んでいくだけで、知識をつけることができると、一石二鳥。

　教科書としても、趣味としても、使えます、

　そして、かの、「紀宮清子内親王殿下」も一筆かかれていますよ。
