この本はどちらかというと、沿線を生かしたまちづくりや鉄道よりも筑波研究学園都市の魅力についてさまざまな切り口で語っている点がある。この本の最大の魅力は何と言っても、沿線の専門家の声、活動家の声などが掲載されており、さまざまな形で筑波の魅力が伝わるような設定になっている。筑波研究学園都市がどんなところかどうか知らなかった人でも魅力がわかるようになっている。

つくばエクスプレス（ＴＸ）の開業前に出た本書でも触れられている
通り、ＴＸ沿線の知名度は周辺地域以外では今もって高いとは言い切れません。
前半部にはＴＸ開業までの経緯が関係者の証言などを中心にまとまって
おり、商業、行政など各方面からの利害構図も読み取れます。
しかしながら、沿線では例えば、私は守谷に行くことが多いのですが、
開発スピードは目を見張るばかりで、某ショッピングセンター裏の空き地が
数ヶ月後には分譲宅地として数十戸程度完成していて驚いたほどです。
一旦注目されると、地価の高騰や地域環境を考慮しない開発などが加速
されると思いますが、文面からはそれを行政や地域民は期待しているようにも
見える点が、首都圏の他の地域開発の失敗例を踏まえたとは言い切れない
部分もあります。
後半部はつくばを中心とした沿線のＮＰＯ、コミュニティー、ベンチャー
企業や新技術などの紹介がされていますが、これはつくばエクスプレス
という余り本論からはずれている話が多いようにも感じました。
沿線への居住を考えている方にはお薦めいたしますが、鉄道開発を中心と
した地域開発という点からみると、物足りない気がします。
