我々が普段なにげなく使っている慣用句から懐かしき日本映画のワンフレーズの、中国人ならではの解釈、はてはスーパーに並ぶ食材の名称にまでに言及。例えば、寿司屋の湯飲みに見られる「魚ヘンの漢字」の多くが日本で作られたものであることは、意外に知られていない。古代中国語が揺籃された地域が、内陸の大河川流域であったことから、「魚といえば川魚」である中国と、むしろ魚は海のものが主流という日本の食文化の違いやなど、日中両国文化への深い理解と豊かな知識に裏打ちされた読み応えのある内容。
漢字という共通の表記を持ちながら、「常識」の違いが生むユーモラスなすれ違いに驚きつつ感心しつつ、あらためて言語は背景となる文化に根差したものであると実感させられた。
激動の変化を遂げる現代中国社会の様相を紹介する著者の数々の著作も学ぶところ多き好著だが、「言語習慣」をテーマにしたこの本は言語の形成過程を溯り、日中両国の古典をひも解き、翻って現在の風俗を参照とした論拠も明解。
しかし、ここで得た知識をネタに蘊蓄を披瀝するには・・・・・いやはや覚えきれないほどの情報量。
文庫サイズでの刊行は、「資料としての持ち歩き」に配慮したものであろうか？
