本著は２０世紀米国外交に関する最高傑作。

アリソンの「決定の本質」と合わせて読まれると、
さらに深く考察することができます。

上下巻にわかれており、
ボリュームを多く、それなりの価格となっておりますが
冷戦後の国際政治の枠組みを考える上でも
本著を通じ、２０世紀の米国外交を知ることは

大変重要であることは周知の事実であります。

本著のような文献が広く読まれていくことを願ってやみません。

5.0 out of 5 stars ハンティントンと並ぶ戦略思想家に学ぶ, 2004/2/8
　現代アメリカ国際政治学の巨匠を挙げよと言われれば、多くの人がハンティントンか、このキッシンジャーかを挙げるであろう。
　彼がその博士課程において記した『回復された世界平和』は「力の均衡」と「価値観の共有」という二つの原理こそ世界秩序の安定に必要であると高らかに主張し、彼の名は一躍全世界に知られることになった。

　彼がその生涯の総決算として著したのが『外交』である。これは、自らが発見した上記の二つの原理を分析の軸に置き、１７世紀における近代国際政治の誕生から冷戦終焉までの「歴史」を描いた超大作である。

　ただ私はこの本を単純に歴史の本として読むことはお勧め出来ない。キッシンジャーの知識は我々の想像の範囲を超えて重厚であり、その表現は微に入り細に入り、内容は難解である。はっきり言って国際政治の素人に読みこなせるものではない。

　ただ主張は非常に明確である。彼の主張は、歴史を通してそれに「反抗」し続けた、アメリカおよびアメリカ国民に対して向けられている。そして今現在、その主張は世界秩序の安定を担おうとするアメリカに受け容れられ始めているようにも見える。

　最後に述べておきたいことは、キッシンジャーが、私たちが通常イメージする純然たる歴史家や政治学者と言うよりも、ハンティントンと同様に、アメリカの偉大なる戦略思想家と呼ぶに相応しいということである。彼の明晰な思考の過程を追うことが、これからアメリカが、そして世界がどう動いていくのかを知ろうとする方に、大きな道標を与えてくれるに違いない。
