本書は主に経済の側面から、都心部への集中政策の重要性について、
8人の経済学者によって実証的に分析された本です。

これまでも、人は都心部に集住するほうが、コストの面でも、生活の豊かさの面でも、
好ましいのでは、と感じることがありましたが、
その問いに理論的な回答を与えてくれています。

北海道夕張市の財政再建団体入りなど、自治体の財政問題がクローズアップされています。
確かに、北海道の各地域をまわると、人のいない街路、その割には立派すぎる道路など
野放図に拡大し続けてきた地域が、このまま存続し続けるのだろうか−
という不安に苛まれることがよくあります。

東京のような大都市についてはもちろんですが、
それ以外の、いわゆる地方の主要都市についても中心部への集中・集住のメリットを
再検討し、政策的に進めていく時期に来ていることを示唆するものでした。
