ＡＬＳという病気に興味を持ってこの本を手に取りました。
筋肉が衰えて、最終的には自分で呼吸することすらできなくなる
このＡＬＳという病気は厚生省指定の難病です。
私が興味をもったのは、その難病の症状の分析や、
治療法の確立までに、あとどのくらい時間がかかりそうかという
点だったのですが、ＡＬＳについて調べれば調べるほど
尊厳死について考えざるをえなくなりました。
というのも、ＡＬＳ患者は最後には自発呼吸すらできないほど
筋肉を弱らせるので、呼吸するために、
喉に呼吸器をつけるかどうかの選択を
迫られる病気だからです。
機械にたよって、強制的に呼吸をしてまで、生きるべきかどうか。
この本は、そこで生きることを選んだ方々が、
いかに生きているかを記録しています。
尊厳死があるのなら、尊厳生というものもあるはずだというのが
本書のテーマのようです。
生きるということがどういうことか、深く考えさせられます。
実にテーマに忠実なのですが、一つの本としての統一性という点で
疑問があるので、評価は星４つですが、
文句なしにいい本です。
是非、読んで欲しい。
