嶋田 俊之
大阪音楽大学音楽学部ピアノ専門特殊研究クラスを経て、同大学院ピアノ研究室修了。同大学教育助手を務め、パリ国立音楽院に短期給費留学派遣の後、渡英。英国王立音楽大学(ロンドン)大学院課程修了。その後ウィーンに留学し、音楽美学、歌曲伴奏、指揮法を学ぶ。これまでに国内外のコンクールにおいて多数受賞し、数々の演奏会に出演、活躍している。幼少のころより絵画、手芸をはじめとするクラフト全般に興味を持ち、学生時代より編み物を始める。ヨーロッパ滞在中に現地のニットに触発され、ニットを中心とするテキスタイルを専門的に学ぶ。ケイフ・ファセット、ローズマリー・カウフマン、リキ・ザウバラー諸氏との親交を深め、また現地のデザイナーのワークショップに参加、アシスタントを務める。現地のニッターから伝統技術の手ほどきを受ける。ヴォーグ学園講師、財)日本手芸普及協会委員、シェットランド・ニットを中心にしたクラスを主宰するなど、後進の指導、普及活動にあたっている(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

ガンジー、アラン、フェアウエイル、等主流な系統を歴史を含めて簡単に説明し、伝統にのっとった編み方を教えてくれているところが今までの編物本と違って興味をそそられました。また編み手が退屈しないように、パターンを繰り返すことなく、全て違うパターンで美しく配列、配色されていますので、とても編みがいがあります。ピアニストでもある作者の芸術センスの高さに感激しました。

とにかく本全体が綺麗です。
ガンジー・フェアアイル・アラン・シェットランドレース（作品はショールのみ）・バスケットステッチの
それぞれの技法について3〜4つの作品が掲載されています。
どれも2号〜6号の細い針で、じっくり編んでいく作品ばかりで、作品をたくさんつくることより、編むことを楽しめる方向けかもしれません。

手作り、特に編物は『センスのいい』作品を作ることが難しく、手間の割に実際に使えるものは少ないように感じていました。
この本にあるものはどれも、身につけてみたくなるものばかりで、デザインセンスのない人間としては嬉しい限りです。
ただしかかる時間や技法は簡単ではなく、明らかに『編める人』向けという印象は受けました。
（帽子など、小さなものから始めてみようと思います）
それでも気に入ったことは確かなので、評価は5。

余談：
作品の名前として、曲名が当てられていることや、
（ラヴェル作『オンディーヌ』／シューマン作『月の夜』……など）
各章の間に著者さんのエッセイが入っていることなども個人的には嬉しかったです。
元となる曲を聴いてみたり、編物の歴史をちょっとかじったりする楽しみ方もできそうです。

ついに出してくれました、嶋田先生。最近本当に真剣に何かを伝えたいと感じる編み物の本がなかった中、魂を感じる１冊です。「カンタンに」とか、「わかりやすい」とかいう類の本とは違い、編み物って元はこういう感じ方から出来た物なんだと言うことを教えてくれるものです。編み図が載っていることで、編み物を好きな人には嬉しいことですが、私個人的には逆に「そこまで詳しく載せなくても」と思うほどきれいに出来ています。編み物は年寄りだけのものじゃないんだ、と皆さんに思っていただけたらいいな。
