本書は、第43回青少年読書感想文全国コンクール課題図書であり、第４回日本絵本賞を受賞しています。

これだけ書くと、どんなに素晴らしい結末が待っているのかと思いきや、ゴムでできた男の子が、ゴムの頭をぶつけながら様々な場所に行くというだけの物語なのです。しかしこの物語の面白さは結末にあるのではなく、ゴムあたまポンたろうが、長新太さんのカラフルで特色ある絵の中で、自由自在に飛んでいくところにあります。そして飛んできたポンたろうを、おおおとこ、バラのとげ、ハリネズミなどが、それぞれの方法でふっとばします。

ポンたろうの旅の終わりは安やかです。ハッピーエンドとは一味違うお話を楽しんで欲しいと思います。また色と色のぶつかりあいを楽しめる絵柄が、大変魅力的です。

子供はあはは・・・と大笑いし、大人はなんだかちょっとシュールな哀愁を感じてしまう作品です。ですから、子供から大人までおすすめです。
