南アからニューヨークにやってきた著者は多くの秀才が集まるコロンビア大の大学院で最先端の理論物理を学ぶ。十分に秀才でありながらも天才ではない著者は、物理の研究でも経済の世界でも様々な驚きととまどいを経験しつつ苦闘しながらも最後に成功を収める過程が等身大で語られている。そのエピソードのそれぞれが実に面白い。また、物理と経済の両方において著者が取り組んだ問題が平易にまとめられているのも魅力。ただし基礎的な誤訳が目立つのがとても残念。せめて物理の専門家に校正をお願いし、地名くらいは調べてから翻訳・出版して欲しい。

「クオンツ」の仕事内容についてはあまり知られていない。未だに、クオンツ＝ロケットサイエンティストと片付けられてしまうことも多い。
本書は、まさしく第一級のクオンツであったダーマンが、その実際の仕事内容について、おそらくは初めて具体的に描写した点で意義深い。
また、「金融モデルはどうあるべきか」、「クオンツはどうあるべきか」という命題に対する筆者の信念ともいえる見解も興味深い。

個人的には、ダーマンの成功が決して順風満帆なものでなかったことに一番驚かされた。困難な状況下で理論物理学者を継続していくことへの不安、中途で挫折し未練を残しながらもウォール街へ足を踏み入れる際の敗北感、拝金主義が蔓延する投資銀行でのクオンツとして働く悲哀等々が淡々と描かれている。そのような中でも過度に悲観的になることなく、実直に忍耐強く取り組んでいった筆者の姿勢には勇気付けられる思いがした。

今となっては珍しくない金融業界の理系出身者だが、そのパイオニアとして著名な筆者による自伝的な内容。クォンツとしての人生を選択した筆者の悲哀と信念が、物理学と計量ファイナンスの歴史とともに語られていて非常に興味深い。 また、私もそうだが、物理を少し学んだ身からは、自然科学から離れて金融というドロドロとした世界に至るまでの過程は、前半と後半の対照的な世界観からも、その苦悩を包み隠さず語られている。 この本を読むまでは、クォンツや金融工学をかじったことがある人なら誰もが知ってるモデルの開発者としか筆者を見ていなかったが、研究者と実務者の狭間で揺れ動く人間的な心情や、数々の挫折など、アカデミックと実務の違いや、この世界で働くことの意味を考えさせられる。 理系で金融業界に就職しようと考えている学生は、日本語訳に多少難はあるものの、一度読んでおくとよいだろう。
