　安全性、倫理面で様々な議論を巻き起こしている遺伝子組み換え（GMO）作物。本書はかつてGMOを含む生命科学分野で一大勢力であった米モンサントの動きを中心に、GMOが誕生し、市場に出るまでの経緯を追ったノンフィクションである。

　1980年代、若い科学者たちは1~2の遺伝子を細胞中に組み込み「形質転換」することで、従来とは異なる価値のある植物を作り出すことに没頭した。最初の有用遺伝子は、土壌に住み、イモムシを殺す作用のあった細菌・バチルス・チューリンゲンシス（Bt）の遺伝子。続いてモンサントの除草剤「ラウンドアップ」に耐性を持つ作物などが開発され、次第にモンサントの商業主義やバイオテク分野での覇権を狙う野心が浮き彫りになっていく。

　種子系・農業系バイオテク企業を次々に買収するなど、事業を強引に推し進めたモンサントのやり方は、欧州の環境保護論者らの反対運動を燃え上がらせた。「農業版マイクロソフト」を目指したモンサントだが、結局は財政危機に直面、スウェーデンの医薬大手ファルマシア・アンド・アップジョンとの合併という道を選ぶ。

　人間が手にした遺伝子組み換え技術を、より理想的に発展させる方法は何だったのかを考えさせられる。

両極端に分かれているＧＭＯの見方だが、こうしてあらゆる角度から見ると、実体がよく把握でき、かつディテールの一つ一つが、小説のようなストーリー性をもって読ませる。どちらにも与していないが、関係者はもとより、われわれ消費者も読んで、きちんとした認識を作りたいと思った。

かねがね、遺伝子組換え作物について、どんなイデオロギーにも与さない「本当のところ」を知りたいと思っていた。この本を読んで、それがだいたいわかってきた。この本は、遺伝子組換え技術の黎明期の段階からお話風に語られているので、技術的なベーシックがある程度理解できたのはうれしい。こうした科学的な話が、主としてモンサントというバイテク企業の興亡の話と、二重らせんのようによられて本が進んでいくので、タイトルにあるように、「なぜ悪者になったのか」というあたりもよくわかった。同時に、米欧の文化的な違いがＧＭＯがらみで鮮明にあぶり出され、そういった文化論としても面白く読めた。少々厚い本だが、最後まで読んでみると、充実感がわいてくる。
