気に入りました。
写真はなく絵も少ないのですが、個々のハーブの歴史や言い伝え
などがたくさん載っているので、覚えようと思っていなくても
覚えてしまいます。効能も詳しいし、成分が載っているので、
より深く理解できます。

写真とかはなく比較的字が多いのでビックリしましたが、他のハーブティーの本を読んでも載っていなかったものなども本当に沢山載っています。まだうまく活用できていませんが、色々覚えて健康に役立てたいと思います。

こちらのレビューで評価が高かったので購入しました。
本文は１色刷で写真は一切なく、小さなさし絵がついている程度。解説されているハーブは106種類とかなり多めです。また内容も、効能や使用上の注意ばかりでなく歴史や言い伝えなどまで言及されているので、個々のハーブに対する好奇心や親近感がいっそう喚起されるような印象を受けます。読み物としても楽しめる本です。
とはいえ、情報量が多いので、初心者はかえって混乱するかもしれません。最初は写真の多い本を選んで、もっとハーブを知りたくなったら２冊目以降のハーブ本として手に取るのが良いように思います。
難点は、翻訳がちょっと…。たとえばアロエの歴史について解説している箇所で、「４世紀も前からアロエはギリシャの医師たちによって」利用されていたとあるのですが、アロエの歴史がたった400年とは思えない。ギリシャの医師たち、とあるので、おそらくこれは「紀元前４世紀から」の誤りではないでしょうか。このようなちょっとした小さな誤訳らしき箇所や、文章の意味は通じるものの日本語として微妙にヘンな感じの文などがあちらこちらに散見され、読んでいてかなり気になります。西洋の歴史的人物の名前の表記にも不正確なものが多く、また「ギンコ」「バードック」「フラックス」がそれぞれイチョウ、ゴボウ、亜麻である、というような日本語の日常的な呼び名について全く触れられていないのも不親切でしょう。訳者はハーブについてかなり詳しい方のようですが、翻訳の能力はそれとはまた別の問題です。これらの難点ゆえに星１個減点。
また、もともとアメリカ人向けに書かれた本なので、日本人にはあまり関係のない内容も含まれています。「マレインティーはブロンドの髪を鮮やかにするのに素晴らしいリンスになります」と言われてもねえ…。
