イスラーム建築史を宗教の発祥から紐解いて
解説した本。記述は一般に分かりやすく・・・を
目指していると思われますが、言い回しや用語が
研究論文調。多少、専門家向きに感じるかもしれません。
しかし写真が多く、用語に慣れてくると、文章と写真が
うまく補完しあって理解しやすくなります。
同じ著者の新書も出ており、そちらは入門書とされています。

著者の世界のイスラーム建築を読み、分かりやすい文章と解説が気に入ったので、本著を購入しました。
が、世界のイスラーム建築が、イスラム建築のおいしいところ一挙紹介という素人にも興味が持ちやすいテーマだったのに比べ、イスラム建築の歴史という少し固めの内容だったからか、文体も読みづらく感じました。（私がバリバリの文系だからかもしれません）
体系的に物事を理解したい、あるいは論文などを読みなれた方には読みやすいのではないかと思います。

5.0 out of 5 stars イスラーム建築の面白さ, 2003/8/5
トルコ旅行が人気だとかつて聞いたことがある。特にイスタンブールあたり。多分何となく不思議な雰囲気が魅力になっているのだろうと勝手に思っている。モスクや尖塔が作り出す、力感に溢れながら秀麗（？）な景観もその大きな要素であろう。

この本はイスラーム建築の歴史がテーマになっているのだが、読んでいくと、世界のあらゆる地域の文化が融合して魅力的な建築が各地に差異を持ちながらも、残されたのだと納得した。イスラームの教祖ムハンマドがその始めを担いながら、彼が予想だにしなかったであろう豊穣な文化の展開。決して禁欲的などとは言い得ない。

建築と聞くと文科系の者は敬遠しがちだが、この本は交じり合って洗練される文化の魅力にあふれている。
