切腹に関する論考は思いのほか少ないので、これなどは貴重なものだ。著者は民俗学者で柳田国男の弟子ということから、日本的習俗という観点から切腹にアプローチしている。結論から言えば、切腹は自殺の方法ではなく、より文化的に意志表示の手段であるということだ。かつての日本人は、精神は内臓に宿ると考えており、心に偽りなしという意味で、内臓を開いてみせるという切腹に意味があった。この意味での切腹は中国や韓国などにも見られるとのことだが、日本では武家政権の成立と共に高度に様式化し、近世においては内臓を露出するのは、「無念腹」と言って忌避されたということだ。著者は切腹という習俗に相当共感しているようで、これが時代の変遷と共に失われてゆくのは惜しいかのような物言いである。確かに、三島由紀夫の一件から30余年、もはや切腹は過去の遺物といって差し支えないだろうが、確か数年前リストラを恨みに思ったブリジストン社員が、社長室で割腹自殺した事件があったし、「だから、あなたも生き抜いて」の著者で有名な大平光代さんも確か中学2年の時に割腹自殺を試み未遂に終わっている。その意味で、いまだ日本人の心性の中に切腹を志向する何かが微小ながらもも残存していると考えるのはあながち不自然ではないだろう。しかし、著者には申し訳ないが、私など、いくら考えてみても、そんな痛そうな死にかたは御免こうむるし、過去の遺物として消えてしまっても一向に苦しゅうないのである。
