−−私がフランス国籍を無くしたとき、私の子供たちは学校で「お母さんはナニジン」と聞かれ、困って「今はナニジンでもない」と答えたら「それじゃ人間ではないんだ」とはやしたてられ、泣きながら戻ってきたことがある。だからといって子供たちを安心させるため「私はユダヤ人なのよ」といって「人間復帰」しようなどとは断じて思わなかった。スピノザが何百年も前に「一民族だけに妥当する神」の矛盾を告発して、ユダヤ人社会から追放されたように、私もユダヤ教と国家主義の中で誕生したイスラエルという国の排他性をいやというほど経験し、そしてまた「異教徒」との結婚によって、私自身もユダヤ人社会の境界を越えた異端者となったのだから。−−（ルティ・ジョスコビッツ『私のなかの『ユダヤ人』』（三一書房・１９８９年）２１ページより）
　これは、日本人と結婚した際、或る事情から、無国籍者にされると言ふ特異な体験をした「ユダヤ人」女性による当時の回想である。−−本書（『ユダヤを知る辞典』）の著者は、この「ユダヤ人」女性（ルティ・ジョスコヴィッツさん）の回想をどう読むであろうか？
　私は、これまで、色々なユダヤ人に出会って来た。その中で感じた事は、その一人一人が、「ユダヤ人」とは何かについて、考え、悩み続けて居たと言ふ事である。そうした彼らの真摯な自問に共感し続けて来た者として、私は、滝川義人氏のこの本を空虚な一冊と感じた。
　「ユダヤ人とは何か？」と問はれると、「ユダヤ教を信仰する者がユダヤ人である」と言ふのが模範解答とされて居る。だが、それでは、ユダヤ教を事実上捨てながら、自分をユダヤ人と考えて居る人々は、どう成るのだろうか？自分が出会って来たユダヤ人の友人たちの顔を思ひ出しながら、私は、そう考えずには居られない。この本に、私のこの疑問に対する答えは有るだろうか？

極東に位置する日本にいても、ニュースでイスラエルの話題を聞かない日がないくらい。にもかかわらず、イスラエルのことをまったく知らないまま、いい大人になってしまい、何かに背中を押されるようにして、この本を読みました。
歴史、政治に疎い、とっつき難い、と感じている方には、イスラエル入門書としてわかり易いと思います。専門用語の羅列ではなく、平易な言葉で書かれていますし、写真も（かなり古いが）多く取り入れられているので、読み飽きないです。
聖書に書かれていることが具現化しているイスラエル。「ユダヤを知る事典」読後、目が離せなくなりました。
