山岳を舞台にした小説は数多くあるが、大抵のものは登攀シーンなどのディテールがリアリズムを欠き、且つバックボーンもステレオタイプの山男を中心に据えた在り来りの作品が目立つ。

しかし、この「北壁の死闘」は、経験者から見てもクライミングシーンがリアルに描写されているにとどまらず、アイガー北壁の初登攀争いの有名な史実である「トニークルツの悲劇」を物語に折り込み、プロットの意外性もインパクトがある。

通常、翻訳ものは翻訳者によって、その作品の価値を下げこそはしても、高める事は稀であるが、本作品は訳者も素晴らしい。
この「北壁の死闘」が、かつてのクライミングバムである海津氏によって翻訳された事の幸運を感謝したい。
この作品がクライミング経験者以外の人々にも満足感を与える事に何の疑いもない。

1980年代の6月21日、山岳ガイドのイェルク・ビンダーとエドゥアルト・アルベンツはアイガー北壁の<神々のトラバース>と呼ばれる岩棚の手前で奇妙な死体を発見した。下半身は白骨化しているものの上半身は損なわれておらず、首にナチ・ドイツの騎士十字勲章と、ロケットをかけており、ロケットの蓋をこじ開けてみると、そこには、はっとするほど美しい女性の写真がおさめられていた。下山後、警察に通報したふたりは、その後、スイス軍諜報機関による尋問を繰り返し受け、この発見については口外せぬように指示され、ようやく開放された。遺体は翌日警察のヘリにより回収されいずこへともなく運び去られた。遺体に興味を持ったBBC補助調査員ローレンス・ヘムズワースは意外な事実を探り出した。第二次世界大戦末期にナチ・ドイツが精鋭クライマーを集めて打った奇策、追い詰められた彼らが魔の北壁で繰り広げた壮絶な死闘。･･･　その事実と謎の全貌がこの作品により明らかになります。

間違いなく傑作本のひとつです。ただ、適度に面白いのではなく、圧倒的に面白いゆえに、本読み初級者の方には余り強くはお勧めできません。なぜなら、こんな作品を最初の段階に読んでしまうと貴方の面白本の基準が余りにも高くなってしまう。それが幸福なことなのか、不幸なことなのか、その点が私には判断できないのです。

　かつて読んだ山岳小説の中では最高におもしろかった。アイガー北壁登攀が題材だが、第二次世界大戦時の逸話が、単なる登攀もの小説とは一線を画す背景となっている。登場人物のほぼ全て（捕虜？）までもがクライマーで、凡人には無理と考えられる程度までは自力でアイガー北壁を登ってしまうところはどうかと思うが、それをさしい引いても前フリからエピローグまで一気に読ませてくれる（エピローグは「予想通り」という人もいるかも？）。
　クライミングや登山に興味がない人にもお薦めできる一冊だと思う（ちなみに、一応巻末にクライミング用語の解説もついています）。
