題名だけは聞いたことがあり、本屋で何気なく手にした本ですが、次の日にはこの第二巻〈野望編〉を買いに走っていました。

勝利を勝ち獲る力のある天才ラインハルトと、敗北を退ける力のある策士ヤン。「勝つ」ことと「負けない」ことは果たして同義と言えるのか。この二人がぶつかりあった時、一体何が起こるのか――。
…という感じの終わりかたをした第一巻ですが、この第二巻では、彼らが直接ぶつかり合うようなことはなく、彼らは各々の陣営で起きた内乱を鎮定するために奔走します。
やがて、それぞれの形でついた決着。そのために失ったものと得たものが、彼らの今後にどう影響してゆくのか…。第三勢力であるフェザーンや地球の動きも気になるところ。

おそらくは二ヶ月おきに刊行されることになりそうですが、既出の作品なのだから、せめて一ヶ月に一冊のペースで出してもらいたいところです。その点だけをマイナスとみなして、あえて星四つということにしておきます。

（余談ですが、余計なイラストがないところは大きなプラス要素です）

2巻の表紙裏に登場人物が掲載されていますが、その数は46名になります。このほかにも、名前の出てくる登場人物は多数います。登場人物の数から物語の規模を想像してみてくだい。
なかなか、重厚な物語になっています。

1983年に徳間ノベルズに発行されて24年たちますが、2007年4月1巻が再発刊、2巻が5月、今後毎月１巻づつ再発刊されてゆくそうです。

物語としての面白さは文句なしだと思います。
さて、今回は貴族連合とラインハルトたち新興勢力の対立がメインの物語です。
しかし再読して、ふと疑問にも思うのは、「貴族が権力を独占して腐敗した帝国」という
姿にしては、20代、30代で数千人以上を指揮する立場に立っている人の多いこと。
それが貴族たちに限定されるならば分かるのですが、平民出身、もしくは貴族でも
下のランクで出世できているのは不思議です。
戦場で功績をたてたにしても、実力・能力主義がこれだけ徹底されているなら、
十分に良い体制なのでは?
