本書は、ＳＦ『スペアーズ』や現代ミステリー『死影』で知られる異才スミスの第１短篇集より原書の１８編中から精選された１２編が収録されています。この本を通して読んですぐに解る事は、例外無く主人公の独白で始まっており、何かしら現代社会に不満を抱いているような気配が感じられます。現状を打破しようとして動いた結果が裏目に出るパターン、自分の心の闇を垣間見る瞬間を捉えたエピソード、不思議な御業によって正義の鉄槌が下される勧善懲悪の物語等、ヴァラエティに富み、何れ劣らぬ読み応えのある力作揃いです。
『バックアップ・ファイル』は、交通事故で今正に失ってしまった妻子を過去に遡って復活させようとする男の話で、順調そうに見えて気づけば思わぬ落とし穴が待ち構えています。『死よりも苦く』は、運命の女の子に出逢えた事に有頂天になる男の話で、ラストで急展開の驚愕が待ち受けます。『見知らぬ旧知』は、親友の彼女に会って朧気な記憶があるのに思い出せない。やがて示される真相と結末は甘いけれど余韻があって印象的です。『猫を描いた男』は、過去に女房を寝取られた絵描きのトムは、押さえ切れない怒りに見舞われた時に、絵を書く事で発散させて来たと言う。ある田舎町で女房子供を虐待する男に出会った彼の行動とは？
その他を含めて全１２編、人間の内面を抉る暗い話が多いですが、不気味だけど何処かで一瞬‘ほっ’とさせてくれる人情味もあって、暖かくて味わい深い一冊だと思います。
