「宇宙を覆う」という壮大な着想のバブルなる未知の存在の謎解きをするというストーリーで、キーポイントとして量子力学の観測者問題を用いた作品である。
大きなテーマの設定の仕方と、その謎解きの着想を読むと新しい世代の大作家だなという気にさせられた。

最初は読みにくいなと思ったのだが、主人公が立場を変えるあたりの中盤からだんだん尻上がりに面白くなった。個人的には本書で出てくる自発的なマインドコントロール装置である「モッド」を用いる記述にすごく興味がもてた。

ナノテクと量子論とサイバーと、宇宙論と探偵ミステリー、おいしそうな素材は全部入れてみましたっていう贅沢なシチュー。
でも、これだけの素材を入れても味は濁っていません。むしろ素材の味を十分以上に楽しめる贅沢で濃厚な仕上がり。
だからといって決して現代ＳＦ入門書っていうわけではありません。ＳＦビギナーはちょっと胃もたれするでしょう。

イーガンのほぼ全ての作品に共通する「アイデンティティへの素朴な疑問と不安」は、本作でも核になっています。

2034年11月15日、冥王星軌道の約二倍の半径を持つ巨大な障壁「バブル」によって太陽系は宇宙から隔離された。この事件の原因は、人類、とくにその脳構造にあるらしい。量子論とナノテクによって事件の真相が明らかにされていく展開には興奮させられる。
