サイボーグものの古典として多くの読者の支持を受けてきたオムニバス形式の本作。

本書に見る奔放なアイデアの連続に、ＳＦの想像力の源泉は、1960年代に汲み尽くされてしまったかと思わされる。ノヴァの爆発を起こす恒星の名前がラヴェルなら、その惑星はダフニスとクロエだなんて冗談みたい。なぜ、木星（のような惑星）でロミオとジュリエットを上演しなければならないのか、などなど。奇想天外な想像力の爆発にただただ脱帽。

自己主張の強いチャーミングな「ヘルヴァ」が本書のヒロイン「歌う船」である。タイトルからすると「歌う船」としての才能を活かして縦横無尽に活躍するサイボーグ宇宙船の物語を想像するが、ヘルヴァは、どちらかというと「歌う船」としての名望をもてあましているかのよう!に見える。声の才能で危機を脱することは、一度ならずあるものの、ヘルヴァにとっては歌は実際のところ楽しみ（趣味）と割り切っているところがいい。
全部面白いのだが、連作の最初の作品「歌った船」（原題が過去形になっていることに秘密がある）のヘルヴァが一番初々しくて好きである。

はじめにハッキリ言っておきますが、他の方が書かれてるような“つたない翻訳”はありません。
この翻訳は“原文に忠実で真摯な翻訳”です。

“Free fall”を「自由落下」と訳して何か不都合があるでしょうか。
そもそも翻訳されたのは２０年前。作者が執筆したのはさらにその２０年前です。
言葉の流行り廃りは当然ありますが、それを考慮しても本書はまっすぐな翻訳のおかげで
全編を通して時代に左右されない自然な文章となっています。同時に、瑞々しさで知られる
アン・マキャフリー自身の表現や言い回しも損なわれずに残っています。
翻訳とは本来こういうものであって、必要以上に意訳すればそれは違う作品になります。

読みづらいと感じたことはないし、むしろ上手いと思わせられましたが‥‥。
正直この「歌う船」の翻訳がダメで「旅立つ船」の翻訳が良い理由が分かりません。
読み心地は、戸板のように軽薄な表現のあちらはライトノベル、こちらは文学寄りといった所でしょうか。

ＳＦですが、物語は人々の心のぶつかり合いです。
そこに心があるからこそ年月は喜びと苦悩に満ち、「生きるという仕事」を続けようと思わせてくれる。
１ページも無駄なページがありません。

まさに完璧。一番好きな小説です。

　海外のＳＦは「長いし堅いし・・・」読みにくい物が多いと感じていたのですがこの本は違います。 　生まれながらにして頭脳を持った宇宙船として、生きることになった女性が、歌う事を、人と出会う事を、恋する事を生き生きと描いています。 　オムニバス形式で進む話はとても読みやすいですし、「ＳＦはチョット・・・」という人にもお勧めの一冊です。
