5.0 out of 5 stars 共産主義社会の正当性もヒーロー出現の必然性もサイエンス！なのがホーガン流, 2009/4/3
「揺籃の星」の続編です。前作は、ホーガン版「妖星ゴラス」「さよならジュピター」または「ディープインパクト」「アルマゲドン」で、地球滅亡の危機に瀕した人々を描いた、宇宙を股にかけたサバイバルアクションでしたが、今回はうってかわってポリティックスリラー的要素が大きくなり、ル・グィンの「所有せざる人々」＋ガニメアンシリーズの架空戦争といった趣でした。

トンデモ本が下地になっているらしいですが、いつもどおり科学万能主義と人間賛歌が高らかに謳い上げられており、これはきっとホーガン流のその擬似科学への挑戦なのではと思います。解説では、ワイリーの「地球最後の日」およびその続編の、ホーガン的焼き直しではないかと述べられています。ワイリーの「地球最後の日」は、たぶん私が小学２年生くらいの頃、初めて読んだＳＦ小説で、私のＳＦマインドの原点のひとつであり、とてもくすぐられます。

また作中、今西錦司先生の「正統派進化論への反逆（生物の世界　所収）」を彷彿とさせる「方向性のある進化論」が語られています。（「反逆」が教科書に載っていたのが高校１年の時、時同じくしてファーストガンダム放映で、「これはニュータイプを語っているのかっ！？」とクラスメイトと大騒ぎしたものでした。）そしてオチは、進化だけでなく人間の行動も、「全体が必要としているからそれに突き動かされて、個がその能力と意思のすべてを賭けて行動してしまう」というもの。これは、岸英光コーチの「世界は自分に何をしろと言ってるのか？」という話に通じます。人々は植民星から地球再建のため帰還してきます。全体が必要としているから種は個体レベルで進化し、全体が必要としているから個人は行動する。共産主義社会の正当性と、ヒーロー出現の必然性をサイエンスで説明してしまうところが、いかにもホーガン流。そして役目を終えたら、個に（普通の男に）戻る。（そんな歌詞が、クイーンの歌うフラッシュ・ゴードンにありましたね！）これももうひとつの「帰還」です。「真の旅は帰還」なのですね！　このへんがうれしい同年代のＳＦファンには超オススメ！します。

著者の作品の中で一番好きなのは「断絶への航海」。この中の互いを信じあう無貨幣社会は、当時、目から鱗の理想社会でした。本書でも同様の社会が描かれ、その脆弱性や問題点を示しています。
これまでの作品でも、ヒーローによる一発逆転はありましたが、「なるほど」という説得力がありました。しかし本作品でのキーン氏の超人振りと乗機の破壊力、その後の展開にはヒーローものにありがちな強引さを感じました。快哉といえない結末に不満が残ります。
